. 10515 Answers SOURCE: Hi, I had a similar problem recently with my elliptical - it was permanently stuck in the 'hard' position. In my case, it has a wheel that turns when you step, and the tension is adjusted by a pair of magnets inside this wheel assembly. These magnets are positioned near the wheel - closer for more tension or further for less tension. The console control electronics that send a signal down to this wheel assembly. There is a little motor that pulls on a short cable to position the magnet(s).
The problem was that the cable attached to one of the magnets snapped, leaving that magnet close to the wheel, i.e. High tension. We had to have a technician order and replace the entire wheel assembly as its individual pieces are not made to be serviceable. It sounds like your case might be similar. Maybe you only have one magnet or two. In any case, I'd look at whether the magnet(s) are moving relative to the wheel when you adjust the tension settings (you should be able to see or hear the magnets move - you might need a buddy to help).
While you may not be able to repair it yourself (you can get yourself pinched badly around these gears and mechanical elements), you will at least know what's going on so you get the right work done if you choose to hire someone. Let me know,if needed further assistance. Hope i helped you. Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

![]()
If the oil level is too high, it will make the clutch act like the torque converter of an automatic transmission and drag. Stand the bike straight up and check the oil level.
The oil level should be higher than the lowest part of the clutch pressure plate. The pressure plate is the shiny aluminum disc with the darker black or blue clutch spring in it. The spring looks like a flat disc as it is a diaphragm type spring. To adjust the clutch, find the cable adjuster near the down tubes at the front of the frame.
Slide the rubber bellows up and loosen the locknut. Turn the adjuster inwards making the cable adjustment as loose as possible. Now, take the derby cover off of the primary. You'll see a bolt and a locknut in the center of the clutch assembly. Loosen the lock nut and turn the center screw inwards until you feel a resistance.
Do not force the screw or you will destroy your inner clutch hub. Turn the bolt inwards until you feel the resistance. Now, back off 1/2 turn and lock the locknut down. Reinstall the derby cover.
Go back to the cable adjuster and adjust it outwards until you have about an 1/8' freeplay. Lock the locknut and slide the bellows cover down over the adjuster.

Adjust the Hydraulic Tension Stop all motion on the Gazelle when you decide to change the hydraulic tension. Remove yourself from the machine and let the machine come to a complete standstill. Do not attempt to adjust the tension while you are on the Gazelle because you could cause yourself an injury. Locate the hydraulic adjustment pins.
These pins are movable and can be positioned in four holes on the Gazelle to adjust the tension. Find them on each side of the machine where the handlebar meets the foot peddle. Pull the clip from the hydraulic pin. Slide the pin out of the hole that it is currently located in. Find the other resistance holes and decide which hole you would like to put the pin in. Place the pin in the hole and reattach the clip. This will help keep the pin in place while you exercise on the Gazelle.
Repeat the same actions on the other adjustment pin.

Hi CRETE2953, Thanks for replying and trying to help me out. I know the batteries are good. I switch out with known working ones.
But that wasn't the problem. I've looked at the wiring into the box and how the wires look going up into the handles. There is a sleeve covering that goes over the handle bars, and I'm thinking the issue could be under there.
I'll have to check into it again during daylight hours. I'm hoping it's something obvious under there, so I can fix it. Everything looks good otherwise. Even the soldering job inside the box looks perfect (I used to build and test computers). It's my luck that it's probably a faulty circuit board.
It's a great machine otherwise. I have the added resistance on mine too. If I can't fix it, I can at least time myself and make notes of resistance etc. Thanks again and have a great week!
My computer on the gazelle quit working soon after I had it. I maybe only had it a few months. There are two little wires that feed to the computer. I started checking them since that seemed like the most logical thing and one was broken.
They lead from both handle bar HR grips to the box. I repaired the wire wrapped some colored electrical tape around the wire and the handle bar back to the little black box. I've had my Gazelle now for probably 12 years and it has yet to fail a second time.
You might also check the batteries. It takes two AAA batteries. It's easy to fix. Hi everyone, I thought I remember reading on here how many minutes on the Gazelle roughly equaled a mile. I don't see it now. Since my computer doesn't work, and never did, I just watch the clock. I haven't used the Gazelle in months and I want to track it as accurately as possible.
I'm going to get on it starting this afternoon and be consistent. It's frustrating not to know the distance and speed, but if it's about 15 minutes to go a mile at a moderate pace, then that would be something to go. I do like to do HIIT on it though, because I'm just not into long bouts of cardio.
Any ideas or guidelines would be very helpful. Also, are there any ongoing challenges in this team?
